Ride what ya got! You can tour on anything as long as your expectations are realistic.
I did a 2600 Mile trip from Toronto, Ontario to Penticton, British Columbia in 4 1/2 days on a 1997 HD Sportster. I don't think I was any more tired at days end that the guys on the big touring bikes (and I'm only a gurl!)

Let's see - I guess I'll sound like an old man now eventhough I don't feel like one, but "Back in my day there was no such thing as a cruiser or sport bike or touring bike. I rode what I had whatever distance I wanted and dammit I loved it!!!"
I'll never forget the thrill of my first cross country tour on my CB1100F with a National Cycle windshield bolted to the quarter fairing and a milk crate bungee corded down in back. I travelled from Champaign, IL to Rapid City, SD to visit my buddy stationed at Ellsworth AFB. The first 150 miles were cold and rainy and I remember laying down under a shelter at a rest area somewhere in Iowa with my rain gear and helmet on shivering and thinking to myself "What have I gotten myself into?!?!?!" Another 100 or so miles down the road the shining sun warming me up and drying me out consequently produced such a feeling of elation within me that only the hard time endured before could have produced. I've never questioned myself about it again!

Couldn't agree with you guys more on choice of touring mounts. As the name suggests, I currently own an H-D Nighttrain and have had it out to the "Wall" in D.C. three times now. People tell me I need a "bagger", but what for? The 'Train is plenty comfortable. Next "touring" bike" - Triumph Thruxton.

I hadn't really thought about it until I was reading through this thread, but my first long-distance (relatively speaking) trip was on an Allstate Super Cruisaire (Sears version of a Vespa 125) from Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi to Tampa, Florida. I was at Keesler with the scooter, and I was going home to Tampa on leave prior to overseas assignment. Seemed logical to ride it.
Predictions are very difficult, especially about the future.
