I am putting together a TowPac Minitrike kit on a Yamaha Majesty for my wife to ride and a thought occured to me. Does she need an M/C endorsement on her driver's license in order to ride a trike?

She doesn't ride, doesn't want to learn but is really looking forward to a trike. Do I have a prob here?

Thanks.
Paul

Welcome to the forum pdebruyn86. I know she would need one in Michigan. I think most if not every state requires a MC endorsement for a three wheeled vehicle. Many states you can take the MSF class for $25 and get your license without a practical test.

All states requires some form of MC endorsement for either 2 or three wheels.

Since the TowPac is considered an accessory, essentially training wheels on a 2 wheeled MC it would (AFAIK) require a 2 wheel endorsement in all states.

A motorcycle with a TowPac would not be permitted in a S/TEP (Sidecar/Trike Education Program) class as it is not considered to be a trike.

It depends on the laws of your state. In NJ, a rider can take the DMV road test on a trike or bike with sidecar but the license endorsement carries a restriction to riding only 3 wheeled bikes.

An endorsement for a two wheeled bike is valid for three-wheeled bikes.

Its usually fairly easy to find the information on your state. Most of them have websites that cover motorcycle regulations.

Here in California, im told that they dropped the MC license requirement for 3 wheel motorcycles and side car rigs. I personally havn't looked it up, but several people have told me the same thing, so it's probably true.  Dennis

It's not just a trike, it's a way of life...
