Corbin makes a seat for the XR. I did not put one on as I used the bike as a commuter and did not spend a lot of seat time at one time. I had planned a trip into Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. It loads well if you use a tent and sleeping bag. It accepted my soft luggage, all the stuff I carry on the Busa for road trips. I did have a small windshield for those trips. Highlight of having it was being at 12000 feet, next to a stream, camping and not having anyone around. The small tank needs to go giving me an 80-100 mile range. The 4 gallon kicked it up to 180 mile range, give or take. What amazed me was the underground riders that worship this bike. It has cult status. I mean some hardcore folks who would never look at anything else. Offroad the bike would pass jeeps and quads without a problem and could get you into places you wondered why you did that. On road the bike had a sweetspot around 60-65. With appropriate care it would easily go 40,000 miles before a rebuild. Before I sold it, a mistake, I rode with the BMW Club and kept up with them with no problem as it would top out at 100 or so but fuel mileage and wear will take its toll at that speed. I would strongly recommend the mods I posted. Hope this answers your question. If you get one take it over to Utah, Moab, and play. It will go where the dedicated offroaders go. Still KTM and BMW make more competent machines. Many of my sportbike friends had no clue, it is a dirty secret .

I own a xr650r that is plated for the road. VERY fun bike, but I also have a few other bikes. The XR will do interstate speeds with ease, on back roads it will surprise many street bikes, and is unmatched on dirt roads and logging trails. The bike is uncorked, has white brothers exhaust and a 6 gallon tank. As I said I have other bikes, so this one fits in nicely, But if I was in your position, and was doing 1 bike, I would get the klr or a bmw gs650 dakar. Good Luck!

Those bikes look like good choices.  I have had limited experience with the KLR. Take a look at the Suzuki DR650 as well--then you also may want to visit a web site that caters to the KLR and DR---

I test rode a KLR and found it to be comfortable and decent for road use. It was much heavier than my XRL and slower. Offroad there was no comparison as the KLR weighed too much. It would get down to which way you want to lean, more towards the dirt or towards the road. KLR does have a good rep for world touring.

Well if we are throwing the GS650 into the mix that is what I really wanted. The price difference was enough that I bought the Strom instead. I have been very pleased with that purchase. Still I would like to try the BMW for a summer.

$10K for the BMW is a little high, I did not even pay that for the FZ1...LOL Although pretty close. My luck is I will not be able to sell the FZ1 due to not finding a buyer for the low $3,400 I am asking. Although that includes a lot of new parts on the bike, chain sprockets, barrnet clutch and springs, fresh BT021 tires, fork brace, frame sliders (used once...lol). Heck I might even fix it up over winter. I already found a good site to get parts from (ridenow.com). 

Either way I'm going to get the KLR650 come spring...I'm leaning more towards dirt but might just pickup also a used dirt bike that I will plate but will mainly use on the dirt.

In reality it all depends on this ticket too, I might be on a 50cc moped...and it will not be the Aprilia SR50 because I found out at the dealer you have to plate them because they go over 35mph...hehehe They go around 55mph before modded, and can be warmed up to go 70mph. Most likely I'll be okay, the brother in-law ont he other hand might be on a 50cc Vespa.

The KLR is on my radar, due to the facts that I tend to ride on roads (but not slabs) and that it would be really nice for my 12 mile commute through horse farm country. My C50 does that commute nicely too, but a C50 cruiser will not successfully get too far from pavement. Picking up a nice used KLR is not a huge investment to buy or to run. Heck, my dealer sells the new ones for $4995 with no add on fees so even that isn't too painful. It wouldn't even take up much garage space. Can you tell I'm trying hard to talk myself into it? The VStrom 650 is also in that fight - perhaps a better choice for my riding. It has been a while since I spent a lot of time on a Kaw 100 dirt bike back on the farm - but that was always a blast.

The KLR sections of the Whitehorse gear catalogs are always chock full of nice stuff too. There are so many good choices.

Whatever you choose, I'm sure it will be a fun ride.
