This post has drifted every which way...LOL

I think MCN's needs more long term test or riders that will ride, ride and ride somemore

As far as BMW, why are their shaft driven bikes pron to break/leak where as other bikes seem to work just fine with shafts???

Are some users just too rough on the bikes?

Apparently the bikes are over priced junk and lack the ability to get down the road without FD failure or factory support. Then again the factory will fix every FD free of charge as all of them fail. It just takes a bit of common sense for pete's sake.

The other bikes like the ST1100/1300 and FJR1300 to name a few, don't have a single sided swingarm. The Gold Wing does...maybe BMW might want to copy it.

A single sided swingarm isn't an issue with a chain driven bike. ie, VFR, Ducati, etc.

BTW, the original BMWs that used a full swingarm like the models mentioned above never had issues. My old 1980 R65 could go 150,000+ miles on the rear drive and not fail.

I really need to read the MCN Article to see the merits of the research. Subscriptions are slow and not very responsive to address changes so I have not had the pleasure of the read. I have but one FD failure and that was on a 78 R100/7 with 50,000 miles and they fixed it...Butler and Smith for which I was eternally thankful being a grad student at the time. All of the K's and R's I have owned never had FD failure aside from the /7. I almost forgot I purchased a used 81 R1000 and the tranny blew up with tranny parts blowing through the housing, I have had other problems, mostly electrical, but rarely mechanical. I do the PM religiously and BMW's do demand PM as systems will fail without it. The old bikes had such low HP/Tq that their ability to stress the FD was just not there. Newer bikes are a different world. The FD, as I understand it was redesigned for 2007 year models due to a higher incidence of FD problems. Perhaps a motorhead could comment further on this. If 4 out of 100 bikes failed one could not help but wonder what the PM history was on the failed machines and what sort of materials were used in the name of competition. I'd hope John Smith had a fD failure as did Joe Rider and their numbers were added to make a case when their role was to overlook or alter PM requirements. I'll be at a BMW rally in a couple weeks and along with beer research I'll look into actual rider experiences. We have a couple IB types that can add a lot to it. A survey does not answer all of the critical questions, it just shows trends.
