If I'm not mistaken there was a link to Harley testing this a couple years ago.

It HAS to happen. EPA, FBI, CIA....whatever. I've always said that the V-Rod motor is the future for H-D.

H-D, tho, has a burden that no other manufacturer has to contend with: it (new and future machines) MUST look and sound like they always have.....or what's the point? Just another UJM, for all intents and purposes.

My '92...running good and strong. But...when H-D puts the V-Rod motor in a dresser frame, I will give it some really serious thought.

Keep the '92, too.

BMW faces a similar issue with their boxer engine, albeit in much smaller numbers, but these numbers do represent a significant part of BMW's sales.  Accordingly, they cannot abandon the boxer engine, and will likely produce it as long as emissions standards can be achieved.

I would bet that those who are charged with protecting the H-D "look, feel, and sound" are hard at work trying to figure out how to introduce liquid cooling into their traditional models. Of course, this is all top secret stuff in order to stave off wholesale mutiny among the air-cooling loyalists.

They should take a look at what Yamaha has done with the new, liquid-cooled 1300 cc V-Star.

The iconic BMW boxer twin hasn't been solely air cooled for quite some time now.  Also, while HD has just the one engine design of the V-twin, and has for a long long time; BMW has the in-line 4's (even with two different designs currently), previously had a inline 3, they now have a parellel twin in the F800 series, and still have their 650 single in the 650.  Very different.  HD has just the V-twin right now.

It wouldn't be difficult for Harley to make a water cooled engine that looks and sounds like a Harley. The looks has been done by all the Japanese manufacturers. Just look at the 800cc and up Vulcans or the 800 and up Shadows. And someone already mentioned the V Star. They all have fake cooling fins.
As far as the sound goes, they just keep the 270 degree firing and the exhaust note will be the same. They wouldn't need to change the primary drive so the "gear" noise would stay the same.
I think the biggest reason they don't is the Harley buyers have said that Antifreeze doesn't belong in a motorcycle. And Harley is listening.

Harley acquired a European motorcycle company recently. I wonder if some of their technology will now be seen in future Harleys? Like the four cylinder, liquid cooled in-line engine they have on one of their models.

Now, let me get this right - is it one down, four up?
