And I always use a clean drain pan. I let the oil sit overnite and pour it into the collection can the next day. What I am looking for is the material that settles out. There really shouldn't be any.
If I ever felt any grit in the oil, I would probably have heart palpitations.
And how do you know that "grit" isn't grit that came off the outside of your "dirty" motorcycle while you were doing that oil change.
Now you know why I like a "clean" motorcycle. Opening up any part of the engine is like open heart surgery and should be performed in a clean environment; that includes the motorcycle. All the best,Alex

Mostly I know because I wipe off any dirt/grit accumulated on the oil drain bolt and the oil filter housing before draining the awl. And the nice clean drain pan aint under the motor when I wipe off said parts.
I usually have to take a small brush to the parts if they are really dirty. Not so much as to get the dirt off though it is convenient at the time to do so. Mostly its so that I can find the safety wire on the parts. Thus, I can see to carefully untwist my safety wire so that I can use it again. I clean the wire and examine it for nicks or weak spots. If it cant be re-used, I trim off the bad bits and add the remaining good bit to the "good used safety wire" tin for use elsewhere on the bike or other machinery about the homestead. the bad stuff goes to the proper recycle bin. nobody rides half as well as they know how.
