Clutch problems, failed transmission, failed final drives, oil puking, etc.

Here is the latest fun repair and supposedly it isn't cheap and requires splitting the cases. Seems like a lot of $$$$ repairs for the owners.

MCNews has no problems giving this machine rave reviews. Moore, 20, of Williamstown in Gloucester County - fell to the road before the explosion, Sgt. Elwood Solomon said. Moore suffered multiple visible injuries to his knee and leg, and he was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, in Galloway Township.

Hospital officials declined to describe Moore's condition Tuesday night, at his family's request.

There were no passengers on the bus, and driver Regina M. Fischer, 50, of Galloway Township, was not injured.
The 2007 Yamaha RS6 motorcycle broke apart after the crash, and the gas tank's combustion set fire to 5,000 square feet of weeds, leaves and small trees, Solomon said. City firefighters put out the fire.
The collision occurred at the dividing line at a curve in the road about a mile east of Philadelphia Avenue. Moore, a licensed motorcyclist, was westbound and Fischer eastbound.
No cause was known and the speeds of the vehicles haven't been determined yet, Solomon said. The speed limit at the crash site is 45 mph.
The crash bent the rim of the bus' outside left rear wheel, flattening the tire, but Fischer controlled the bus to stop at the side of the road. It was to be towed later in the day.
The road closed for a half-hour after the accident.

From the Orlando Sentinel

March 23, 2008

1 motorcyclist killed, another injured in crash with truck

ORLANDO - One motorcyclist was killed and another seriously injured in a crash involving a truck Saturday on Old Goldenrod Road in Orange County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

John Jarreau, 52, of Geneva was pronounced dead at Florida Hospital East, an FHP report said. We will be in a campground and it would seem like we all could meet there and have a fire and just talk late into the eve while watching for disgruntled Civil War Ghosts. No RV.., pack a tent, we will make room. Let me know and when I figure out our plans I will let you know and see if we could really make this the first MCN Forum reunion. Is the Gettysburg area too far away, what would be some good alternatives? I will be free and able to go anywhere recommended by folks so lets do it. I'd like to see some areas Jeb Stuart did his magic as well as blew it. In any case meeting you and seeing your steed will be cool. I know with some winter is holding on but I thought I'd start this to hear about how difficult some of our riding is in what we would consider the "better" riding weather.

Here in the Ozarks we can still have an overnight freeze but as I peek the keys I'm hearing a Spring thunderstorm outside my window. We are also beginning tornado season here in the southern Ozarks. Earlier today it was 78 degrees but the rest of the week is full of chances for thunderstorms and cool riding weather. I'll take this over those summer days over 100 degrees with high humidity. So we will see what this riding season holds in store.

141 mpg Scooter (Hybrid)

<a href="http://blog.wired.com/cars/2008/11/piaggio-unveils.html" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://blog.wired.com/cars/2008/11/piaggio-unveils.html

Winter Toy

Video:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfpQmuPO7c0" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfpQmuPO7c0

Article:
<a href="http://hellforleathermagazine.com/2008/02/ad-boivin-explorer-aprilia-sxv.html" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://hellforleathermagazine.com/2008/02/ad-boivin-explorer-aprilia-sxv.html

Site that sells the kits:
<a href="http://2moto.com/" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://2moto.com/

Motorcycle Consumer News

Is this legit from MCN????

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Consumer-News-2-year/dp/B000WM6NZM" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Consumer-News-2-year/dp/B000WM6NZM
bike links & stuff, as collected

AWRIGHT!
I posted up a few links to videos of biker stuff that seemed to be recieved well or tolerated. I played mine today. I ended up at Wild Horse BBQ in Sallisaw, Oklahoma for a late lunch. Then I sat my GPS to take me home and ever so often when I saw a road that might meander in that direction I'd turn that way and go until the GPS re-calculated and didn't tell me to turn around. I'd follow that road a while and see all kinds of new sights from the foliage or something else different in the landscape that I had not seen before even if I may have been down that road before. Thats about my 2nd or 3rd favorite game on the bike. My short tenure as a day trader was somewhat like a love-affair with a Queen Honey Bee; short, sweet, intense and ended up stinging me hard and sending me back to being a real worker-bee. But it is fun to speculate here from time to time. For those of you who's 401k has been sinking like ratings of a Oliver Stone movie at a John Birch Society Meeting we have seen our lifes savings going up in smoke. No worries, we still have our two-wheeled steeds to bring some happiness to our tired bones. But what will happen to some of the outrageous prices of new motorcycles?? That is the question I ponder this morning as I anticipate my days outing on my two-wheeled behemoth called a "Gold Wing." Daily I study the classifieds to see what two-wheeled wonder some fickly owner such as myself has grown tired of and ready to toss some other direction for a pittance of wampum. Sadly I realize some of these people are parting company not because their love-affair has grown as cold as a aging pop-star orgy but they are parting with their two-wheeled friend out of financial necessity and the saddest part is all to often they owe more than the market will allow on their steed. So I wonder will the banks that soon own them be able to get anything near what the payoff is or will they have to write off a large debt. And will my conscience even allow me to offer a low price to the owner, knowing they can't afford to take it and can't afford not to. But any item is only worth what it will produce in viable currency or trade.

Helmets with Bluetooth Capability

I am thinking about buying one of these things but am not sure as to how they work and what to look for. I am new here and just wanted to say hello and thanks for accepting my membership. This Thursday I start my msf class, Finally. I have been procrastinating for a year now. Go figure, I own a website dedicated to female riders but I don't even know how to ride yet. Well does a 4 wheeler count?.. anyway i would like some support and good advice if you have any.... So similar as that I believe that it was this very model. At the show there was no indication who was making the trainer. It doesn't come as a surprise to me that Honda has backed this effort in some way. I may bother to try and find my related post at the time and bring it here as an edit.

Unfortunately, at the show there was too much noise to hear the audio prompts. And there wasn't enough time to fully play with the machine due to others wanting to get their chance. The rider coach at the time was really helpful.

M. Santos notes that "there are many more hazards than a ride would have in real life." I would beg to differ. Here in good ol' chicagoland, the video doesnt have enough to stay current.

I hope that the trainer will be in a few chicagoland dealerships. I will be calling around looking to have some more fun. If anyone can post up a link as to which dealerships (nationwide) have the trainer, I would appreciate that.

This could be a great thing. I envision lots of people trying it for lots of different reasons and having a great time learning neat stuff while being unaware of how much their "rider's intuition" is being improved.

Looks like fun to me!

CNN Motorcycle Story

I found this interesting and thought it would spur some discussion here.

What do you think? I search the internet and saw where some people drill symetrical holes in their muffle tailpipes to get a better sound or they "debaffle" them. I don't know enough about it to make a well informed decision - does anyone have a good web site that explains this? I have always used my bike daily for everything, and here in Austin I have noticed that there are lots of older bikes on the road. I thing all of these older bikes wher stored in garages and broght out to try to save a little mone on gas. I've seen a couple at vintage shows in the last year.
Little bikes like these were probably way ahead of their time. Sort of the scooters of today. I remember the Cushman and the Hummer and the Harley Rapido.
Does any one else have some cool links or memories of little motorcycles from the past?

2008 Demo Ride impressions...

... from a non-professional such as myself at the just concluding Bikes, Blues and BBQ in NW Arkansas.
--H-D did it right. Sign you up and as soon as the bike you want is ready its off you go on the laid out course, un-escorted (except for the V-Rod Muscle).

--V-Rod Muscle - kool bike but why not put that motor in something of touring design??

--Electra-Glide CVO - 30-something grand for a bike my stock Wing will blow away. And yes I can buy two Wings for the CVO price.

--Cross-bones - First time I ever rode a springer. Kool styling, poor handling suspension. Motor is much better than the suspension can handle.

--Rocker C - Kool look, handled ok, passenger must remove their butt to ride, can't have any junk in the trunk and still fit. If you plan on carrying even a change of underwear this bike is not for you. No wonder those chopper guys smell so bad.

--Heritage Softail Classic - "Hello my old friend." Not fast but it works. If I was gonna buy another Harley this would be the one. Smooth engine, reasonable power, running lights, windshield, bags and plenty of comfort that just fits me.

--All the rest of the H-Ds very forgetable.

--V-Max - boo, I didn't get to ride they were booked. Initially great looking bike that looks good, runs good and is priced to NOT sell.

--Victory Vision - I was prepared and wanted to like this bike. It did not happen. I applaud the way they have stuck with their brand and continued to grow their products and hope they continue to do so. But I was very disappointed in the bike. I rode it after an hour and forty-five minute ride on the Wing in 50 degree weather with the grip warmers and seat warmer on at speeds of 80-90 mph. The Vision quickly turned into a Nightmare. The transmission was clunky, the power was disappointing, and the bike just felt cheap. I did like the large floorboards and the way the were tilted to make a comfortable position for my 6ft1 frame. But by the time I got back 40 minutes later what I first thought was comfortable had made my back hurt, my legs were suffering from lack of circulation and my bottom was already sore. They tried to out V-Twin Harley and got beat hands down IMHO.

--Kaw ZX-14. "Forgive me Lord for the lust in my heart" that was only exceeded by the pain in my wrists. This bike was a monster in every gear, at every speed. It was tight and well-balanced. But after 20 minutes my hands hurt. It was gobbs better than my ZX-11. Thats pretty technical but explains exactly how it seemed. Whatever category you mention it was gobbs better in everything. If I could turn the clock back 25 years this would be the bike I'd want but would try to keep myself from buying in order to keep my drivers liscense.

--Kaw Versys - This was another bike that I was prepared to like a lot. In fact I went into this experiment looking for a small bike that I would add to the stable to go with the Wing. I felt sure after all I'd read this would be that bike; after riding I realized it definitely is not the one. I was pleased with the price for all that you got. As I somewhat aggresively moved thru the gears I was sad that the engine was rather anemic even compared to the Wing. The buzz in the engine transferred to the seat giving your butt a buzz rather than the H-D vibration. Ok I know how you guys are gonna take that and run with it but thats the most accurate way I can describe it without pondering how to avoid your wisecracks.

--Editing this to add one that I forgot which was the H-D Electra-Glide trike. This was my first time to ever ride a trike. I knew all about how the steering physics were different but had never experienced it. For someone that has been riding motorcycles for over 40 years it was a disconcerting feel. I didn't care for it. I'm sure I'd get used to it if I had to, and I hope I never have to.

Many models I didn't ride this year because I rode them last year and they remain largely unchanged such as the Concours, the big cruisers from Kaw, Yam and Victory, and the FJR, FZ1 and R1. I'm certainly not a professional and didn't get a chance to put these bikes thru very many tests. But I know my riding style and what I look for in a bike. Your riding style and needs may vary from this long-time rider so my views are just that. One of these that I mentioned that I didn't like may be just what you are looking for and would fit your needs perfectly. I very much appreciate all the brands that made their bikes available to us. This could not have been an inexpensive endeavor. I think Honda missed out on a good opportunity. I don't know if the brands that did show up will recoup their expenses with bikes they sell from this event but I do know that there will be bikes sold by those that allowed us to ride that would not have been sold. Also the people these companies sent to represent them did a fine job and left a very favorable impression of their company.

new rider bike recommendations.

I am a new rider 6ft 1inch tall 210 lbs. Which to me seems crazy for a speeding ticket.

I'm probably going to tell the lawyer to talk with the DA again and make it sound like we want a Jury trial or a better deal, because they do not have a leg to stand on. Which even our lawyer said. (brother in-law is going to talk to the lawyer today). Worst case I'll be calling the DA...and explain to him he has nothing.

Our lawyer has mailed us the police report, so we should get that soon. I guess the cop said she first Visually saw us at 134mph, and then she locked onto us with radar at 132mph (remember she was going the other way, and I do not care how good a cop is trained things look slower coming head on). Also she acts like we were riding together which is not true, I was ahead and had passed many vehicles and the brother in-law was waiting till he could make legal passes. At no time other then when we got to the mountain were we together. Also she claimed her vehicle a Dodge SUV could not go 132mph to keep up with...so how then if we did 132mph was she right behind us as we turned into the lot. So her claim that she was RIGHT behind us when we turned into the parking lot, can not be true we were parked and the brother in-law had his helmet off and I was about to take mine off. We were in the lot a good 3-4 minutes before we watched her come into the lot.

For all she knew we were going the other way (wrong bikes).

See reasons like this is why I do not like cops that do traffic duty, they feel they got to lie to make their case stronger. So I feel maybe I should lie too. If I did take it to Jury trial maybe I'll just say I was going the other way, show me some proof...like in vehicle camera or something. Which I'm assuming (forgot to ask the lawyer) if there was one because that would obviously show the truth, and we probably get off Scott free.

Well at least it is a county jail in the middle of nowhere so like the lawyer said, it be like a cheap motel with crappy food. He said it would not be crowded and the people in there would be those with DUI's and other petty crimes.

K&N

K&N say you can replace your stock filter element for a little boost in power with no other mods. I did that to my GSF600S and it immediately ran terrible. After I put the stock filter back & it ran perfect, I wanted to take it back, but it was a Honda place where my wife worked and they said they have Honda filters that sit on the shelf, and this is a Suzuki....

I didn't want gas mileage to go down, so I re-jetted the airbox...made a figure-8 shape out of the thin, corrugated cardboard the thing came in. Eventually, I got it to run as good as before.

So, now it seems the filter got a little dirty, and gas mileage dropped, and I'm sure performance has, too. So, I put the stock, paper element back in & I think things are good again.

So, my advice is, if you want to improve performance you can put a K&N in and re-jet & leave the stock exhaust where it is. But if you don't want to re-jet, don't bother as their claims of boosting power with no modifications is a total lie.

But this is just my experience...I am wondering if others experienced the thame sing.

VFR Interceptor question

Test rode an '02 Interceptor for a friend. Well kind of...

He came and looked at the bike, liked what he saw, liked the price and did not even haggle. He is new to motorcycles, and is in the Army so thus he had to take the MSF course still.

Because of a previous flake of a buyer I told him I wanted a non refundable deposit of $500 so I would know he is serious and thus would cancel the ads. He went to an ATM and brought me the $500 in cash, I then had him sign a contract stating that this was non refundable and the remainder of the amount owed is $2,900. I had him sign two copies and gave him one and one for my record.

He was suppose to pickup the bike October 2nd (Thursday) and I saved all the emails and reread them and that is the day we agreed on. He was suppose to show up with a buddy to get the bike and pay the remainder balance in cash, I also had offered to trailer him the bike or ride it to his place if I could get a ride back. So really no excuse that he could not get the bike even earlier if he wanted (as I do not work and he knows that I am home all day everyday).

Contact stopped from him on 9-30-2008, and still I have heard nothing from his private or Army email account. He has both my home and cell numbers that were provided to him in email, plus he knows my address.

I guess what time frame legally should I give this guy to come get the bike? At this point I might just wait till spring to sell the bike anyways...but was going to fix it up more in the winter (heck I might have a change of hart and keep it even). I still hold the title unsigned, still insured, and still plated.

Thanks for the help from everyone on this...
