My father rides a Goldwing and when he started having problems with his balance, he put on a sidecar. His wife at the time was already riding a Goldwing Trike. He decided on sidecar because it was a cheaper alternative.

With the sidecar, turns into the sidecar are a challenge. You cannot lean towards the sidecar with most of them. Turns the other way make the sidecar raise off the ground. He used to carry 50LBs of ballast in the sidecar when he didnt have anyone in it. this would help with turns.

He took a sidecar training course, and the first thing the instructor did was have them remove the ballast. By the end of the course, they were riding circles with the sidecar hanging in the air. He loved the course, and found that the sidecar is fun to ride with now.

One more issue that I don't think has been mentioned when considering a sidecar rig versus a trike: it is more difficult to miss obstacles (potholes, debris, and the like) while riding a trike due to the three wheel track. A sidecar outfit is a two track vehicle (albeit a narrower track than a car) that allows you to more easily miss (straddle) obstacles in the middle of the lane.

I have a very personal reason for wanting a trike. When I was about 10 years old my father bought an old 3 wheel police bike, (H-D). Lot's of fond memories, and I want to follow in his footsteps.

I ride a trike because it's fun.  I have a VW trike that was made in California, moved to Arizona, and then to Nevada.  It's now back in Arizona.

Trikes are like HDs', they are holes in the street that you throw huge sums of money into.

By the way, Honda, and BMW make trikes.  They start at $28,000.

Well, I'm free on three, and don't have to put my foot down at a traffic light.

Free on three, and dead trikes leave no trails.

i WOULD LIKE TO WEIGH IN ON YOUR "WHY A TRIKE QUESTION".

# 1  cHICKS LOVE 'EM,

# 2 THEY DONT "ACCIDENTLY" FALL OVER WHEN YOU STOP,

# 3 WOMEN LOVE THEM.

# 4 YOu CAN RIDE THEM IN THE SNOW,

# 5 girls wont leave you alone!,

# 6 if it is a bug based trike they are VERY cheap.

# 7 you will never be lonesome for female companionship,

# 8 they draw big crowds wherever u go,

# 9 the girls.....well you get the idea by now.

After having a 2 wheeler and then converting to a trike (bad hip), I find that the trike is much more stable, in all situations. It takes a little getting used too, however that's what big parking lots are for. My wife likes the trike and feels safer, besides it let's me pull a larger trailer with out fighting the wind drag when pulling w/2 wheeler. The older I get, the more I like the multy day trips and dislike the tight twisties. Trikes are a handful in the twisties. Mountain riding is the tops for me on my Goldwing Trike.

Not feeble, but am diabetic. The only reason I got a trike is that I'd rather roll to the side of the road rather than ...
