You are so right Z-Man. But we are coming upon my favorite riding time: late fall and winter. But you may be where it gets really, really cold. Here in NW Arkansas we can ride most of the winter, except for a few days of frozen rain and snow.

I wouldn't say really really cold, but previously it has been cold enough to not enjoy a ride (twenties and colder). However, I just got my Gerbings clothing and wonder how far I can push the envelope. I need to get a helmet liner and better winter boots for riding, but look forward to going below my previous 38 degree cut off.
Gotta say, I was looking at the tours of Arizona last night, really getting my riding juices going .....

I have been to the Alps and to Norway on a bike tour. I wouldn't mind going back to either one but most likely won't as I would prefer to go places I haven't been. New Zealand is on my list to do after I get retired. I want to make it a big trip and rent a bike to ride across the southern coast of Australia and then New Zealand before or after that. I am figuring on about a month. I don't want to be on a tour group though.
I rode to Alaska several years ago. Because I have I have checked into renting a bike up there and just flying up. I haven't checked lately but I would expect they have a good buisiness renting in Alaska.
As far as a tour group anywhere in the States I will pass. Once I get retired I will be able to take some long trips across the country and spend some time anywhere that interests me so I don't see the need for a guide. I have made several cross country trips and have seen the big things that I care to. When I get retired I will be checking out the small things and back roads that I have not had the time for in the past.

Let me thanks you, one and all, for the great ideas. I am planning to take a month and ride the American South East. Tennessee, Ga, South Carolina and north Carolina.
I will start planning my trip tonight and try to go in Mid September and early October. Thanks for the idea. I'll let you know how it works out.

caseysanta Bill, you live in a great area. You may pass those roads often and take them for granted but people ride from all over to experience that beauty you take for granted, so see it anew, with eyes that have not grown accustomed to its beauty. In the 80's into the 90's I lived in Lubbock, TX for 8 years and enjoyed riding there in that flat desert land. My wife and I would climb on the old Wing and do a sunset ride in the cool dry desert air. Some of the most beautiful sunsets there I've ever seen except in Key West.
