My new 1200 xl R uses oil , about 1 qt. every 500 miles, i ,as well as my friends i ride with do not notice any white smoke indicating broken rings, performance is fine no problem there, the bike has 11,000 miles and does not leak a drop of oil !!! ,i notice a little oil in the air breather but none leaking out. At about 5,000 miles i had to change the sparkplugs as they appeared to be a bit oil fouled.. I hear there is a condition called wet sump,.. it is caused by a check valve in the oil pump that prevents oil from the tank from seeping into or entering the crankcase when the engine is cut off,. lowering the oil level in the oil tank and giving the impression that the oil level is low and by adding oil ,the engine is actually overfilled with oil and forces the oil through the crankcase vents/air cleaner retainer bolts screwed into the top of each cylinder head and back through the carb. causing excessive use of oil. If you could please help me with this problem i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again. Bruce G. Weckman

Try running the oil level closer to the "add" mark. Too little air in the oil tank inhibits the crankcase breather's ability to deal with pressure fluctuations. This can cause the breather to vent excess oil into the intake.

Sounds like you don't have the rings broken in yet. you need to load the engine and use more of the rev range. get out on the road and in the apopriate area give the bike full open throttle for as long as you feel safe. the combustion pressures will force the rings out and help with proper break in. Don't be afraid of hurting that HD engine she is stout enough and can take alot more than that. Good luck
