Hey all,

Long-time suscriber, new to these boards. Downtime Files diagnosed a knocking sound problem a while back, and if memory serves sounds a lot like the problem I am having. Wondering if any of you remember it.

I have a hard, knocking sound from my VFR at low RPM. If I give it a little throttle and pick the RPMs up, she is smooth and silent. A friend who is a BMW MC wrench heard it, and said it didn't sound like anything he has ever heard in the engine. Downtime Files diagnosed a similar problem as being something in the transmission that absorbs some of the shock of the engnine's power pulses. I can't recall what exactly they diagnosed, and although I have pretty much ever issue for the last decade or so, I can't find the article.

Can you guys give me a hand figuring out what they were talking about in the tranny, or even better, anyone have any idea what issue it was in?

Thanks!

If it doesn't have gear whine and a single sided swingarm, it aint a VFR. ;)

The first thing that pops into my mind is carburetor synchronization. If the carbs are not properly synced then you will be getting uneven power from each cylinder which can in turn produce those bizarre knocking sounds that are coming from the crank area and/or transmission. I have heard the same sort of noise with my CBR while adjusting the carb synchronization and it does become more pronounced when the vacuum on one cylinder is way off. My friend has a newer VFR with Fuel Injection, but I would assume the ’92 models do not have FI.

As far as something in the transmission absorbing the shock of power pulses, I remember reading something in MCN about that as well and as I recall it had to do with rubber “shock absorbers” in the final drive assembly of the rear wheel on bikes with driveshafts.
