As a matter of fact the only reason I bought my BMW, was that I was told you were specifically forbidden to wash the bike.

Hey, don't complain. If it weren't for people like "us", you wouldn't be able to buy a good clean used bike that was well looked after.

I on the other hand have a tough time with all the junk that is out there when I go used bike shopping .

All the best,
Alex

PLEASE ... don't use the towels or washcloths found in your hotel room to scrub your bike. Take a minute to walk down to the front desk, and ask them for a couple of "cleaning rags" so you can knock the bugs off your bike. Most places keep a huge supply of old, tattered towels and the like for their room cleaning staff, and will gladly round up a few for you, just so you DON'T use their "good stuff" for washing bugs off. Being responsible in this fashion will make life easier for all the other motorcyclists that might stop at that motel in the future.

As far as general cleaning my bike, I was her down good 3 or 4 times a year with hot water and cheap dish soap. Then, after a thorough drying, she gets a couple coats of good carnauba wax. Between washings, I use a can of plain old Pledge for cleanups. Works great on the windshield to remove bugs (spray it on, let it set for 2 or 3 minutes, then _gently_ rub it off), plus it leaves a light coat of wax so that tomorrows bugs come off easier as well. It does a nice job on the plastics too, between the regular wash/wax cycles. That's important on a bike with as much Tupperware as my Honda Pacific Coast. It also works just as well on the helmet and faceshield.

I keep a can of Pledge and two or three soft rags in the trunk all the time. I'd recommend again the "lemon scented" Pledge, unless you like to engage in kung-fu fighting with bees every time you stop at a traffic light!  Ask me how I know...

I and many others see it the other way around.

OK.  I stand corrected.

ibafran (8/17/2008)[hr ... I washed my bike this saturday past.  ...

Are there any advantages to having a clean bike?  As noted, I recently washed my bike. Shortly thereafter by several days, I inadvertently touched my horn button. The horn hasn't worked for a bunch of years. In previous posts way back when, it was noted that trying to find the cure for the non-working horn without tearing into a lot of wiring harness wasnt working. I imagine my surprise when the horn beeped? It beeped several more times as the button was activated. What Ho?!!! A pleasant surprise! It continued to work for several days. Did the bike washing solve this problem?

Apparently not. The bike is still pretty clean. The horn quit working the other day. Previous washings did not get it to work. And a subsequent washing didnt help either. Alas. The horn remains a mystery. Yet its mistique endures and abounds.

Ahhhh, to those who know, no explanation is necessary, and to those who don't, none is possible.

The horn remains a mystery.

Simple diagnostic skills and a DMM are all that are needed. A few minutes at most!
