| like I said, I lean towards the syle of a cruiser but I guess I need to actually try some of these bikes on a test ride. Is there anywhere you can recommend that rates the various bikes like a consumers reports does for cars?

Hmm...thats a toughie! Most mags are tough to figure, some more trustworthy than others. I've never looked on line for a specific site that rates all bikes. Best advice is to look at a number of write ups on bikes you might like then see them in the flesh. MCN usually gives the straight scoop on a bike and pulls no punches since it doesn't run ads from the Bike makers. I would recommend a demo if you can pull it off thats the only way to really get a feel for the bike.

| smaller=lighter=eazier to control= better chance to recover if you get into trouble. Once you are a better rider, moving up may make sence but far too many people start out on bikes that are just too big for them (skill set, not inseam). Sporties are nice bikes and if you go with basic black in the XL883 you are looking at $6,600 list. On the sport touring side I'd give a good, hard look at the Susuki DL-650 V-Strom, likely the best all-round standard out there for the money right now ($6,700). My guess is you may not fall in love with the looks but if you ever ride one, you'll be amazed at how well they work. 'Good luck in the course and good call in taking it. By the way, you can check both of above bikes out here: XL883 http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/Article_Page.aspx? DL-650 http://www.amadirectlink.com/news/2005/DL650VStrom/DL650VStrom.asp
