Has anyone compared the effectiveness of the different methods for protection from traffic photo? I've heard of different products, including covers, sprays, and louvers. I have no experience with them, however I would guess their effectiveness is variable depending on whether flash photo or infrared photo or video is used by cities.

I remember seeing ads for various license plate covers....but the ads didn't last long. Maybe because they were scams...If something like that (them) really worked, word would get out, fortunes would be made, the ads would be never ending and the product would be legislated illegal.

Like radar detectors are almost completely ineffective due to the "instant on" radar guns used, deemed illegal in some states, but radar detectors are still being sold. But in their heyday, the manufacturers really made some bucks.

I have seen the traffic photo plate covers and they do work to some degree.  What I think works better is there are some web sites that have waypoints for your Garmin GPSr.  If you have the right GPSr it will alert you when you are close to one.

My experience with RADAR detectors has been somewhat better than Jim's.  My Escort rocks.  Even with instant on RADAR as long as the cop hits a car when I am within a mile of them I will get an alert.  I have even had it save me from LASER when a car ahead of me got hit.  I could not see the cop but slowed down and he was behind a bridge.  The best detectors are the Escort and V1.  The Escort works as well in my opinion and cost less.  The V1 is able to tell you the direction of the signal letting you know if the cop is behind you, in front of you, or off to the side.

Saw an R1200RT with a clear cover over the plate with what appeared to be a 3M privacy filter over the plate number. This would seem to fend off attacks from traffic cameras and reports from the adjacent lane.

All other attacks were probably deflected by the "11-99 Member" frame.

The privacy filter was a good idea but I question the legality of it.  I want to avoid tickets not get extra ones added on.

I once had the opportunity for a police officer to explain to me that you are not allowed to add or have anything cover your license plate. Anything meant clear plastic, a license frame that covers any of the writing or dirt as in my case. It was a dirt bike the whole thing was covered including me. He told me that I need to clean off the plate before I enter the road way, that way an officer could tell that the bike was legally registered for road use. He spent ten minutes lecturing me, I though for sure he wasn't going to write me up after being so helpful on all the rules. When he started to write it, I asked if that was a points ticket, he said "No.", I laughed, He didn't. He told me he was going to follow me and if I dropped any dirt he would write me up for littering. I told him fine, made a right hand turn and disappeared into the woods.

Long story short, if you cover your plate, it gives them cause to stop you, and if he doesn’t like you it gives him one more item to write up.
