| Does anybody know what percentage of BMW's failed to finish this year's Iron Butt rally because of final drive failures?

I have no idea on the percentage, but at least 5 BMW's had final drive failures.
No Harley dropped out due to mechanical problems.

SRG (9/2/2007) I have no idea on the percentage, but at least 5 BMW's had final drive failures.
No Harley dropped out due to mechanical problems. congrats to the sportster rider for finishing in third place. jokes will be made (i.e. it will take a month for him to stop vibrating). but nothing will diminish his accomplishment in my eyes. prior to his start, i noted the spare drive belt and asked if he was prepared to change it? the reply was that he had changed it twice. once to make sure that he had the proper tools on the bike and the know-how. the second change was for a base time for the opperation. thus, he would already know what the opperation would likely do to his route schedule. very prepared at all levels; mechanicals, rally experience, physically, mentally, spiritually. congrats to the victory rider having the intestinal fortitude to run an untested bike. jokes will be made...but it is still an outstanding accomplishment. congrats to Vicki Johnson. nearly cracked the top ten with her 650 bmw. i am in awe. no triumph dropped out, period. not only did the rider "laugh at day 9"; but he probably laughed with happiness through the whole rally. you meet the happiest people on a triumph.
nobody rides half as well as they know how.

| I love the ride of my BMW. Nothing I have riden handles like it or is as comfortable. BUT I DOUBT I WILL OWN ANOTHER. Repairs are much larger in cost than other bikes and there is a HUGE thread on the BMW MOA forums about the FD failures. Makes me wonder if the bikes are going the way of the cars. Great performance while they are working.

Drummer, when I compared the LT with the Wing they both handle very nice but what put me on the Wing was that total cost of ownership. Just figure out the cost of the schedule maintenance for each. Over the lifetime the LT was thousands of dollars more due not only to the higher per hour rate but also the frequency of some of the more labor intensive checks.

Torqueman - I have owned a few Hondas, a couple of Yamahas, one HD (we will not talk about that POS), and now the R1100 during my life. I inherited the Beemer and think the world of it. However, at the time I got the bike, I put my 1100 Shadow up for sale. When it came time to close the deal, I took the bike to the local Honda dealer for a once over to make sure it was in good shape to sell. The dealer did a number of checks and adjustments totaling $75. The next week I took the BMW in for an oil change and once over (since I had acquired the bike without much knowledge of its history) this total was $325.

JerseyJim - Beemer bashing, not really, more like scale of economy or ROI or capitalistic profiteering bashing - the bike I have is good it is the costing of it that scares me.
As for the new Beemers, I truly haven't heard that many voices happy with their quality. Or better stated, the squeaky wheel is getting much more attention these days. And that is what scares me about staying with BMW - the quality and high cost.
