You all know by now that one of my big hot buttons has been the rising cost of motel rooms. It is totally out of control.
People who can most afford to pay for rooms get the best price breaks. I have learned to play the system a little myself in recent years by asking "can I have the corporate rate for xyz?" Where xyz is some local large company. I justify it ethically because I don't really say I work for them I just say I want the discount. In some cases I have had the price cut 50% doing this.
Still this is not always a magic bullet and I wish there was some easer way to get real price breaks on rooms. So please let us know not only what you budget but how you find rooms at that rate. And can you stay in budget or is reality that you will go over?

| By making reservations on-line I'm hopefully getting a fairly good rate. Canadian prices are truly ridiculous. Last summer I couldn't find anything below $99 CDN across Canada to Hyder, Alaska. On the return trip through the northern U.S. we regularly paid $50 - $60 for budget lodging like Super 8, and Ma and Pa Motels. This year I'm looking forward to a trip from MN to Nova Scotia to ride the Cabot Trail. So far I haven't found any reasonable lodging in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia -- mostly in the $129 - $159 a night range. This is for three people in the same room. Still, I'll enjoy the trip knowing that if I wait it will probably cost more later. Ray Nielsen, in Minneapolis and sitting out winter right now, but I went to the Motorcycle Show today.

I hear ya Torque - I probably pay too much for motel rooms because my wife insists on having hot and cold running water, heat and air-conditioning, a toilet, and...get this - a bed! Who does she think she is, a princess or something?
I keep trying to convince her to spend just one night in the wooded median divider you find on super highways but with no luck so far. Plus I tell her that sometimes a car will throw a McDonald's bag out its window with some food still left in it so it's kinda like a lodging includes breakfast deal.
Now, let me get this right - is it one down, four up?

| I would have voted in the poll by now. But I dont have a good grasp of the question. Are those figures for a single, double, or the whole group? edit: Upon further reflection, the choices seem too limited. Shouldn't the Iron Butt Motel be on the list. Its always right where you need one, its always open, it always has a vacancy, and it always fits the budget with room to spare.
nobody rides half as well as they know how.

I will always stay in a motel 6 if there is one available. When touring on the bike all I am looking for is a place to sleep that is clean. I always ask to look at the room before paying. I have only had to decline twice in many, many stops at the motel 6. I cannot afford the higher priced motels and carry camping gear if needed.

Rnelson, I need to travel with you. Even the Motel 8 I have stopped at have been in the $80 to $100 range. Last Motel 8 I stayed at was $130 but we did have a jacuzzi room and a great view of the Mackinaw Bridge.
Fran, it has been my observation that is does not matter much anymore on price if you have one or two people in a room. Also if you spend every night in the Iron Butt Motel you are a riding god and one frugal chap. Maybe I should have included a less that $50 per night? Lets just say on the nights you stay in motels how much do you plan to spend?
Rootie, keep that beauty queen happy and the trip will be more fun. It is why I don't try camping again. Though I too have always wonder if anyone ever camps in those nice wooded areas between the lanes. Camp files and flashlights may be a give away.
sv650, I have looked at some before paying. Once I went back to the front desk and asked for my money back after seeing the room. At another place the room was dark and only had a couple of high windows. The "river view" was through a 8 inch wide window. I went to the desk and complained and they said for $20 more they had another room I could look at. That extra $20 got a jacuzzi tub and private deck over the river.
I have such a limited time off I hate to spend it looking for rooms. The Garmin is a great way to find rooms and their front desk phone numbers but they don't list every motel. Many mom and pop motels are not listed.
In the past I have looked at web sites that list mom and pop motels but the ratings are so subjective that some of the places that others rated great I would rate poor.
