I have a 2005 Yamaha V Star 650 Silverado.  On my way to work this morning my oil cap came off.  When i arrived at work I had oil on every part of my bike.  There was no performance changes to prompt me to pull over.  I bought a new cap and filled it back to level with oil.  I then washed it off with a mild degreaser.  Everything appeared to be okay when i took it for a test drive.  When I got home i noticed oil was coming out of the top of the case.  I didnt notice any cracks or anything.  Could the oil just be missed oil from the cleaning. I also noticed when i arrived at home i had a tough time putting the bike in nuetral.  The bottom line is, should i be worried?

A little more info would be helpful.

How much oil did it take to make it come back to level? Did you use the correct oil?

An expanded discription of what you mean by, "oil was coming out of the top of the case"?   Which case?   "Coming out" how? Spurting? Oozing?  Was the bike running when the oil was coming out?  Is there an engine breather where the oil is coming from?

How many miles on the bike?  Was the bike used?  Any service record?

Did you get the cap from the dealer? Did you happen to mention the problem to the dealer?  If the oil is coming out from the new cap, you might be missing the o-ring that is often found in the cap.

WAG: I doubt that things are damaged badly based one the discription so far.

If you resolve this before needing to post more info, let us know what you found?

When I was a snot nosed kid and new to bikes, one of the old oldtimers advised me to drill all my oil plugs, including caps, for safety wire. Thus, I have yet to lose any of that stuff.

I note that this post got 13 visits without response. So. I thought to take a shot. Other for'm ex-spurts will hopefully chime in with stuff that I forgot to ask or mention.

nobody rides half as well as they know how.

Ok Fran, I’ll respond with the one though I had.

The cap fell off,

1 because it was not put back correctly/completely.

2 some passage has gotten plugged up on the inside of the engine and pressure built up and popped the cap off.

If number 2 is what has happen, it may have also blown a seal, and the oil all over the engine was from the seal getting blown out and the oil that was all over the engine was not from the where the cap area.

I am hoping for # 1. Been there done that!

Thank you for your answer, I replaced the oil with two quarts that I got from my dealership, I sure hope they would sell me the correct kind, it was Honda 10W-40. The bike was used but it had less than 500 miles when I purchased it, I did the first service at 1000 and now it has 3844.  I was able to find the cap in my driveway, the bad part is that I drove it all the way to work without it and my job is about 23 miles away.

The oil appears to be coming out of the rear cylinder head, but I am not entirely sure if it is really coming out or if it is excess oil that I was unable to clean off.  The bike was literally saturated with oil when I got to work, as was the back of my jacket and my helmet.

I have, through this experience, learned to inspect my bike thoroughly every morning before I leave, but I am still having difficulty with my clutch at times, and I am just concerned that something was damaged? The bike is still under warrenty but I am afraid to tell the dealership what happened because they may decide that it was my mistake and not fix whatever issues thaere may be. Do you have any experience with this?

I was hoping that an expert would be able to hazard a guess as to if the bike is likely to be damaged or if I should just keep riding it.  I do have an oil change coming up at 4000 miles so at that time I will be able to more clearly see if the oil is leaking or just dripping off from the spill.  I have no idea how the cap came off though. I did not loosen it at any time, and the last service, as mentioned, was at 1000 miles.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

If your oil pressure light did not come on, more than likely you did not lose oil pressure---and that is what would cause damage.  More than likely, what you see on the engine now is residue that has not been cleaned yet.  You may try some engine de-greaser found at auto supply stores. (aerosol can) Use it on a cool engine--rinse it well.  It will leave an after-smell but that will go away quickly. Be sure the rear tire is cleaned...you don't wanna to fall down!

let us know how it turns out.......

Allright, I'll throw my $.02 in too...

I'm not terribly familiar with your bike, but here goes:

If your oil cap is a screw-on type (IIRC, it is), it's not likely that internal pressure "popped" it out. It is much more likely that the o-ring is missing, or it was not installed properly.

If it is a push-in style, it's possible that your breather could be plugged causing a crankcase pressure buildup that may dislodge it and force oil through seals and gaskets. That could also be caused by blow-by from internal wear/damage -but you say it's running well, so I'd guess that's not the problem.

If your engine is a wet-sump design and the engine oil also serves to lube your clutch and/or trans, the level may well have dropped enough to damage the clutch and/or trans long before you would have lost oil pressure.

Minivans. Why is it ALWAYS the minivans?

Thanks to all for replying.  Did a complete oil change (not just a fill) with synthetic oil and there is no problems now.  I feel 100% better.  Took the bike on a 3 hour trip and no funny buisness.  I have learned my lesson:  always double check the tightness of the oil cap and any other bolt/screw that might cause damage if fallen out.  Thanks again
