...no I'm not talking about lawyers. I'm speaking of the 4 legged kind. We all know about the big ones like deer but I'm talking about little ones. I've been fortunate over the years by hitting plenty and never going down such as West TX jack-rabbits (as big as a dog), several small rabbits, squirrels, birds and plenty of dogs, even a big Rotweiller. But last week a rider I know of hit a skunk. They don't know if he was trying to miss it or what but they found him next morning out in the field of a country road with numerous injuries, none of which were life-threatening except the head injury. He was riding a Harley and of course the H-D dress code says you are not to wear a helmet, which he was not. So just a reminder to all who try to avoid hitting the small varmits. They can take you down when you hit them a glancing blow. Brace yourself and take the bike up and over them. It takes a lot more impact to knock a bike and rider down that is braced and straight and level than a bike that is in a lean. (This advice sent with my apologies to the DFSFVA [Defense For Small Furry Varmits Assoc.)

I didn't know him personally but he was a friend of a friend and his accident created a vivid reminder of what I've told many in this area who are new to riding or have started riding once again. A lot of my riding friends live out of town and after dark the varmits are all over the road. The fresh road-kill each morning is a vivid reminder of the splats.

Here in MI we have a lot of squishable little varmints running around. Most common is the opossum. They must be dumb as dirt as they line the roads. You guys have armadillos don't you? I imagine hitting one of those would not be good at all.

Hi Torque, yes we have possums too, but abound with Armadillos. You certainly don't want to hit one of those varmits. They are hard-shelled and tough as nails. I'd rather hit a big dog as an Armadillo. Dogs flex when you hit them as opposed to Armadillos with that hard shell. Sorry thats a little gruesome but true.

rpclark (8/4/2008) I wouldn't ride my SuperGlide around the block without a helmet. Dude I don't know you well enough to know whether that was a real comment or you just innocently lit a match in a oil refinery or what but that remark will hijack a thread, change a subject, start a war, and change a country. So maybe you are innocent or maybe you just started a fire to watch it burn but either way now stand back and watch what you have done.
