On Saturday August 30,  my friends Jeff (ZX-14) & Derek (LT1200) & I ( Electrglide Ultra Classic) are embarking on what will no doubt be a most excellent adventure. It will include 5 dirt track nationals, the MotoGP in Indianapolis, 2 motorcycle museums, and every great road east of the Mississippi River that the moto-mags rave about. All in a mere 2 weeks!

We leave Ohio for Springfield, Illinois where we will watch the Short Track National on Saturday night, followed by the Mile on Sunday & another Mile on Monday.

Tuesday we will ride to St. Louis to visit Dave Mungenast's Classic Motorcycle Museum before heading to Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Wednesday, we visit Cyclemo's Motorcycle Museum in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. Then we ride the Devil's Triangle while en route to the Cherohala Skyway, stopping for the night in Robbinsville, North Carolina. Hopefully we will arrive in time to ride Wayah Road, just to the south.

Thursday takes us to Hellbender Road & the Tail of the Dragon. Then we procede through eastern Tennessee to the Snake. We continue north into Virginia where there are many great, unpublicized, mountain roads - stopping near Roanoke for the night.

Friday finds us on the same type roads in Virginia, into West Virginia & western Maryland where we ride the Old National Road. This a fantastic stretch of pavement with little traffic & lots of twisties. We will stay in Hancock, Maryland or a little north into Pennsylvania, depending on time.

Saturday we wind through Pennsylvania into New York to Monticello, where we attend the Half Mile National dirt track race.

Sunday we twist our way through Pennsylvania, enjoying the mountains, particularly PA. Rt. 120, and stay in the Allegheny Mountains at Marienville.

Monday we head home. It will be a short day. About 250 miles.

We regroup, do laundry, pay bills, pull maintenance on the bikes & on Thursday, September 11, we're off again. Destination : Indianapolis. We have 3 day passes to the Moto GP & will also attend the return of the Indy Mile at the fairgrounds.

Sunday, after the races, we will make the reluctant ride home to north central Ohio & return to work on Monday, September 15.

This route is almost perfect! It sounds ambitious but we only have 2 days over 325 miles, the 1st to Springfield, & the Tuesday we leave Springfield.

With the crooked roads, the museums & the races, it's a bikers dream come true!

Mission Accomplished!!  (Sort of)

Springfield had great racing, as they alsways do. And I got to catch up with old friends. We were introduced to the curator of the Dave Mungenast Classic Motorcycle Museum in St. Louis while we were at Saturday Night's Short Track.

Tuesday when we went to the Museum, we had a personalized tour!

Everything went as described above with a few minor exceptions. We opted to take the free ferry across the Ohio River at Cave-in Rock, Illinois. When we got to Cyclemo's Museum in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee on Wednesday, we found out that it is only open Thursday through Sunday.

We rode approximately 150 miles in the remnants of Hurricane Hanna to get to Monticello, New York, where the Half Mile Dirt Track Race was postponed to Sunday afternoon. Of course we stayed & watched Kenny Coolbeth win the race & the Championship.

In all a most excellent trip! More crooked roads than you can shake a stick at!!

It worked out at approximately 3200 miles, 10 days, 10 states, 4 dirt track nationals, a motorcycle museum, and all the roads the magazines brag about (& some great ones they don't brag on yet) east of the Mississippi.

That was the first leg of the trip. After returning home & regrouping, Thursday set us off to see the MotoGP in Indianapolis. We partied downtown Thursday night at the Red Bull set-up.

Friday we went to the track & watched practice in the rain. Not a great day.

After leaving the track, I was broadsided by a pickup truck in town. I am okay with some bumps & bruises ( I was EXTREMELY lucky) but walked away. Unfortunately, my '06 HD Ultra Classic is probably totaled. A bad situation that could have been much much worse. I cut it short in Indy due to this incident.

One of my very good friends drve over with a trailer to get me & the bike. I am now at home recovering from alot of stiffness & soreness. I estimate that I will be out on the Pacific Coast in a week or so. I am going to wait to hear from the Insurance company & then I will go bike shopping.

Sorry I don't have pics but I will see if I can get them posted later when I am more mobile. Right now I am hobbled with a very sore knee from the crash. It is feeling better but I am not doing stairs for a few more days.

Thanks for checking this out, I will answer any questions as best I can, if anyone is interested.

Sorry to hear about your crash TheHiMiler. It is too bad your trip was cut short but great that you could walk away mostly OK. How do you get broadsided and not at least break a leg? That is very lucky I would think. Hope you had good insurance on the bike.

It sounds like you had a great trip. You guys did a good job of laying things out. I'm just sorry it ended as it did for you. At least you don't seem to be seriously injured. So you will just have to do it again next year to improve on the ending. Get well in a hurry.

To RePete & Torqueman, thanks for the thoughts. Yes, Torqueman, I was very lucky. My friend Jeff & I were talking about it. If I'd have been about 1 mph faster, I'd have made it through unscathed. About 1 mph slower, I'd probably have lost a leg. Very lucky indeed. I rode the PC last night. I felt a little paranoid, but I will get over that. (I hope!). So now I wait to hear from the insurance company. I hate this part.

It looks like I'll be OK. I will be relegated to the Pacific Coast for awhile but at least I'm still riding! Thanks again guys for the kind words of sympathy.
